There are 3 pieces to a Miata exhaust system:
1. The header or exhaust manifold
2. Catalytic converter
3. Muffler and/or tailpipe
All three pieces are bolted together and then hung with rubber hangers underneath the car.
Installing a less restrictive exhaust system ie better airflow can get you 4-18 more horsepower to your Miata. Of course, it may also make your engine sound louder which is a good or bad thing depending on your opinion.
