Hard tops are great in that it is easy to add extra toys like radar and GPS antennas. Hard tops are not always hands-down the better choice: they add a considerable amount of weight compared to canvas, and they do need to be waxed from time to time. Lastly, they take up significantly more room that a soft top and they are also much heavier which increases the overall weight of the car leading to increased fuel consumption and decreased performance.

Miata.net has a good chart for matching hard-top sizes to various Miata models.

Miata Soft Top

Replacing your soft top or roof on the Miata is not a job for the faint-hearted, despite what some people may tell you. Even though there are how-to books and reference sites scattered over the internet telling you how to replace your Miata soft top, you need many specialized tools and at least a weekend to do the job.

Needless to say, I took my Miata to a professional to get it replace and it cost about $300. Look in the yellow pages for a tradesman who does car upholstery. If you live in a reasonably big North America city, there are always tradesmen about who do convertible roof replacement, especially for all the BMW and Porsche owners out there.

Miata Exhaust Systems: Boost your HP

There are 3 pieces to a Miata exhaust system:

1. The header or exhaust manifold
2. Catalytic converter
3. Muffler and/or tailpipe

All three pieces are bolted together and then hung with rubber hangers underneath the car.
Installing a less restrictive exhaust system ie better airflow can get you 4-18 more horsepower to your Miata. Of course, it may also make your engine sound louder which is a good or bad thing depending on your opinion.

Miata Supercharger Kits

Remember that a supercharger and a turbocharger do the same thing. They ram more air into the intake (forced air induction) thus leading to more powerful combustion.

The difference lies that a turbo is driven by exhaust gas pressure, and a supercharger is driven by a belt off the crankshaft.

Miata Shocks: Best Way to Improve the Handling

If you are the buyer of an used Miata, first thing you will most likely notice is that the ride is a little bumpy. Why is that? Because it's most likely the owner didn't want to drop a grand on installing new shocks just before selling it. So maybe you should considering installing shocks yourself.

Stock Miata shocks usually only last about 30,000 miles. It's pretty easy to tell if they are worn-out, as you tend to bounce all over the road going over the slightest bump.

Now if you are considering buying a used Miata, maybe it's a good idea to ask if they are still on factory shocks (most likely).

Aftermarket shocks usually come with adjustability controls too, so if you are ready to blow some bucks on the Miata, new shocks are usually the best investment.
